The Opportunity:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is transforming its financial and business operations through the Financial Management Business Transformation (FMBT) program. We are seeking an experienced Business Intelligence (BI) Data Estate Developers to support the design, development, and optimization of enterprise data solutions that enable advanced analytics, reporting, and decision-making across the VA’s financial and operational landscape.
This role will focus on data engineering, BI development, and data model optimization within the VA’s evolving Data Estate environment, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and secure data delivery to business stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
Design, build, and maintain data pipelines, data models, and BI solutions within the VA’s Data Estate environment using Microsoft Power BI.
Develop and optimize ETL processes to support reporting, analytics, and system integrations.
Collaborate with data architects, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions.
Implement data quality checks, error handling, and performance tuning to ensure system efficiency and data integrity.
Support the migration and transformation of legacy datasets into the modern VA Data Estate environment.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including data dictionaries, data flow diagrams, and solution design documents.
Provide production support and troubleshooting for data-related issues and user queries.
Qualifications:
Required:
(BA/BS) or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years of related work experience.
Experience in data engineering, BI development, or database development.
Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Azure Synapse, or Azure Data Factory.
Proven ability to design and implement ETL processes, data models, and data pipelines.
Experience with Power BI or similar BI tools for report and dashboard development.
Proficiency in SQL for data extraction, transformation, and validation.
Understanding of data governance, metadata management, and data quality best practices.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a large, matrixed federal program environment.
Desired:
Experience supporting federal government financial or operational data environments.
Familiarity with Momentum Financials or similar ERP systems.
Experience with Azure DevOps, Data Lake, and DataBricks.
Knowledge of data warehousing principles and cloud data architecture.
Understanding of federal reporting and compliance requirements.
Experience with Agile delivery methodologies and cross-functional team collaboration.

The proposed salary range for this position is:
