General Statement of Duties

The Assistant Director of Online Learning guides the development of engaging online courses, promotes innovative practices in online learning, and oversees program development processes. This position collaborates with faculty and instructional designers on course reviews, manages data collection, and provides feedback for continuous improvement. The Assistant Director will possess expertise in online pedagogy, online learning design, and assessment practices, with a commitment to enhancing the learning experience for all students, regardless of modality.

Please Note: This position is grant-funded through June 2027 and continued employment is contingent upon on-going grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards to ensure the quality and integrity of online courses and programs and enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  2. Collaborate with faculty and instructional designers to review and evaluate online courses, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
  3. Manage the collection and analysis of data related to online course quality and student satisfaction, synthesizing findings into actionable insights and recommendations that inform continuous improvement efforts.
  4. Coordinate the assessment of online learning outcomes, working with faculty and instructional designers to develop assessment strategies and tools that measure student achievement and program effectiveness.
  5. Collaborate with academic departments and administrative units to ensure alignment of online learning initiatives with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
  6. Collaborate with faculty and instructional designers to design, develop, and evaluate online courses and programs that promote student engagement, learning, and success.
  7. Manage the queue of courses that need learning design support, coordinating with faculty, program chairs, the learning design team.
  8. Work with Instructional Technology Services team to ensure courses are set-up, made available to students, and backed-up in a timely manner each term.
  9. Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and pedagogical approaches in online learning, incorporating innovative practices into course and program development.
  10. Collaborate with academic units such as DGCE to design and develop new online offerings–including for-credit and non-credit programs and courses–shepherding them through the approval and launch processes.
  11. Provide recommendations to the CTI Director to modify or improve policies or procedures.
  12. Provide feedback to other team members and to the CTI Director on best practices and strategies.
  13. Collaborate with University partners to ensure alignment to provide the best possible experience for SSU students.
  14. Develop and refine infrastructure processes seeking continuous improvements, innovation, and optimization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in higher education, educational assessment, instructional design, educational technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in online learning, instructional design, educational technology, or a related field, preferably in higher education.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance frameworks and standards in higher education and online learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online pedagogy, best practices in online course development and delivery, and assessment methodologies, including direct and indirect measures of student learning.
  • Experience with learning management systems (LMS).
  • Project management experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in higher education, educational assessment, instructional design, educational technology or a related field.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and processes in higher education (e.g., NECHE, NC-SARA, etc).
  • Collaborative mindset and demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators across departments.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the ability to integrate these principles into online learning and quality assurance practices.

Working Conditions:

This is a hybrid position in Salem, MA with some on-campus, in-person responsibilities which may require occasional work on evenings and weekends.

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
