The Director of Treasury Management provides strategic leadership for German American Bank’s customer-facing treasury management business, including sales, product delivery and development, implementation, and service. This role drives profitable growth in commercial operating deposits, treasury fee income, and customer relationships by delivering integrated payments, receivables, liquidity, and fraud-prevention solutions. Reporting to the EVP Chief Banking Officer, the Director partners across Commercial Banking, Retail Banking, Operations, Technology, Finance, Risk, and Compliance to deliver exceptional customer experience and scalable, consistent delivery model.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute a multi-year treasury management strategy and annual business plan aligned with the Bank’s deposit and revenue growth priorities, customer needs, and risk appetite. Establish goals for commercial operating deposits, treasury fee income, payment activity, and customer adoption.
- Manage treasury management financial performance, including annual revenue and expense budgets, product and relationship profitability, pricing standards, account analysis, and fee exceptions within delegated authority. Partner with Finance and Line of Business leadership on deposit economics and earnings credit assumptions.
- Partner with Commercial Banking and other customer-facing teams on coordinated calling plans, needs assessments, proposals, referrals, and relationship expansion. Establish disciplined pipeline management and CRM practices to convert opportunities into implemented services, operating deposits, and recurring fee income.
- Own the treasury management product roadmap and lifecycle for the Bank’s approved services, including ACH, wire transfers, remote deposit capture, lockbox, positive pay, commercial digital banking, liquidity solutions, and card or merchant services in coordination with the responsible business owners. Develop business cases, evaluate vendors, and lead cross-functional launch, testing, training, and adoption activities.
- Maintain senior-level relationships with key business customers and prospects, providing consultative guidance on payments, receivables, cash flow, and fraud prevention. Sponsor complex implementations and service escalations, gather customer feedback, and coordinate solutions that improve retention and deepen relationships.
- Lead the treasury management sales and service teams as assigned within the organizational structure. Recruit, coach, and develop talent; establish clear responsibilities, staffing plans, cross-training, and succession coverage; and build a collaborative, customer-focused culture with strong risk discipline.
- Establish end-to-end customer onboarding, implementation, training, and service standards with clear handoffs among Sales, Operations, and Technology. Monitor implementation cycle time, accuracy, service responsiveness, and customer issue resolution; improve workflows and capacity to support scalable growth across the Bank’s markets.
- Partner with Technology, Operations, and third-party risk management on vendor selection, service-level expectations, performance reviews, system enhancements, and business continuity testing. Coordinate customer communications and escalation procedures for service disruptions.
- Provide executive leadership with a regular business scorecard covering operating deposit growth and retention, treasury fee income, profitability, pipeline conversion, product adoption, implementation and service performance, and significant risk issues. Explain variances and recommend corrective actions and resource priorities.
- Coordinate ongoing product, consultative-sales, and fraud-awareness training for treasury management team, relationship managers, and customers. Partner with Marketing on clear product positioning, educational materials, and targeted campaigns.
- Monitor customer needs, competitive offerings, pricing, and payment-industry developments. Evaluate faster payments, automation, and integration capabilities with Technology and Operations based on customer value, economics, operational readiness, and risk; recommend priorities rather than introducing services outside the Bank’s approval process.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in bank treasury management, cash management, or commercial banking, including direct experience delivering treasury management solutions, with at least 5 of those years spent leading sales teams.
- Deep knowledge of commercial payments, receivables, liquidity solutions, fraud-prevention services, and commercial digital banking, including ACH, wire transfers, remote deposit capture, positive pay, and account analysis.
- Demonstrated success developing commercial customer relationships and growing treasury fee income, operating deposits, and product adoption through consultative sales and effective partnership with commercial bankers.
- Strong leadership, strategic planning, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to develop talent, manage budgets and priorities, interpret business metrics, and influence partners across functions and markets.
- Strong working knowledge of treasury services compliance, payment-network rules, fraud risks, operational controls, and audit and examination expectations; ability to work effectively with Risk, Compliance, and Information Security.
- Ability to translate customer and business needs into technology and process requirements and lead cross-functional product implementations, vendor coordination, change management, and service improvements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Treasury Professional (CTP), Accredited ACH Professional (AAP), or Accredited Payments Risk Professional (APRP) designation.
- MBA or other relevant advanced degree.
- Experience leading treasury management capabilities at a regional or community bank of comparable scale, including multi-market delivery, platform conversions, or acquisition integrations.
