The Student Advocates Office (SAO) is proud to be a department within the Office of Student Life, committed to promoting learning and respect in all programs, interactions, and partnerships.
The Student Advocates Office (SAO) assists students in resolving academic and conduct issues. SAO provides a space for all students to be listened to nonjudgmentally, provides unconditional support, and helps students to resolve issues so that they can successfully maintain progress towards their degree.
The Part-Time Conduct Support Staff member assists the Student Advocates Office at Indiana University Bloomington by managing student cases in coordination with the full-time Assistant Director.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Provides advising, guidance, and coaching to students navigating a broad range of conduct-related concerns.
- Supports students with academic issues and assists with front desk operations as needed.
- Helps manage student conduct cases, as assigned, and include student drop-ins during their assigned shift.
- Provides advising, coaching, and support to students and their families.
- Maintain case records and support students returning from suspension
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director on students of concern and conduct volunteer advocate support.
- Assist with front desk coverage and other office operations as needed.
- Attend office and conduct team meetings, training, and orientations.
- Support the Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, and Client Services Assistant as needed.
- Work collaboratively with staff to advance the mission of the Student Advocates Office.
- Report directly to the Assistant Director of the Student Advocates Office.
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Professional experience working in crisis intervention and/or experience working with IU students.
- Experience working with college students.
- Professional experience working in crisis intervention.
SKILLS
Required
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage cases, maintain accurate records, and prepare reports and documentation.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with crisis intervention, conflict de-escalation, and supporting students in distress.
- Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and provide compassionate, nonjudgmental support to students facing academic, conduct, financial, mental health, or personal challenges.
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
