The Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (IUMAA) is Indiana University's newest museum. The IUMAA takes aspects of the former Mathers Museum of World Culture and the Laboratory of Archaeology and combines them into 1 cohesive experience. With an impactful long-term vision focusing on purposeful storytelling, stewarding collections, and bringing these items to communities, the IUMAA thoughtfully houses and displays over 5 million artifacts that span a broad range of human experience. The IUMAA is accessible for research as well as teaching and is culturally connected to our broader community through partnerships with Indigenous communities, advisory boards, and other IUMAA community members.
The Part-Time Museum Registrar Assistant provides support for collections management and museum registration activities. This role contributes to the accurate documentation, organization, and accessibility of collections records, both physical and digital. The position involves structured, task based work and requires attention to detail, reliability, and comfort working with established procedures.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Assists with object inventories by verifying object locations, counts, and associated documentation.
- Supports the processing of backlogged collections through organized review and documentation of materials.
- Creates, updates, and maintains records in the collections management database in accordance with institutional standards.
- Reviews, reorganizes, and improves physical accessions files and related records to enhance clarity, consistency, and accessibility.
- Handles collections of documentation and materials with care, maintain confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies.
- Performs additional registration or collection-related tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION
Required
- Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Experience in a museum, archive, library, or special collections environment.
SKILLS
Required
- Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain accurate records.
- Basic computer proficiency, including experience using databases or standard office software.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to work within established workflows.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality for scheduled work hours.
- Ability to manage assigned tasks independently and maintain focus during routine or repetitive work.
Preferred
- A student studying at the graduate level or 3rd or 4th year at the undergraduate level.
- Familiarity with collections management systems or registration practices.
- Coursework or demonstrated interest in museum studies, archival studies, library science, or a related field.
This position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment. Requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
The person in this role must have the ability to move materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to perform light physical tasks related to filing, organizing records, and handling boxed materials. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
Bloomington, Indiana
This is an in-person position.
$15.00 per hour
13-18 hours per week
Position is capped at 29 hours per week.
Work hours and days will be determined based on department needs and your class schedule availability
Museum hours are 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday
