LA CASA CULTURAL CENTER (BL-CASA-IUBLA)

The Office of Student Life is focused on building a strong foundation to ensure every student's Indiana University experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. The Office of Student Life staff and multiple departments aim to help students navigate their time at IU, providing the tools they need to be successful in school and after graduation. Established in 1973, La Casa/Latino Cultural Center serves as an important link and advocate between the university and the Latine community, working closely with other campus units, the Bloomington community, and state and national groups. Building on a strong campus community, La Casa provides programming, support, and opportunities to foster a sense of belonging and pride for Latine students, while assisting in their academic, leadership, professional, and social development.

The Part-Time Student Office Assistant position provides office service coverage as well as administrative and programming assistance. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the applicant, he/she may also have additional project assignments.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Answers and transfers phone calls.
  • Greets and directs guests.
  • Answers questions and provide resources to parents, students, faculty, alumni and others.
  • Performs computer work, which may include database entry, update newsletters/calendars and producing materials for programs and workshops.
  • Assists with event preparation and execution, including transporting, setting up, and dismantling event equipment, furnishings, promotional items, and supplies.
  • Provides support with programs such as those for National Hispanic Heritage Month and Day of the Dead celebration.
  • Develops and coordinates 1 program, workshop, or speaker presentation per semester.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University Bloomington

Preferred

  • Federal work-study eligibility

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 6 months office experience

SKILLS

Required

  • Self-motivated and able to work well in a team environment
  • Able to interact professionally, tactfully and politely with faculty, staff, students, and community representatives
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Knowledge of common Office applications, including Word processing, spreadsheet, data base, and presentation software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Dependability and flexibility

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Latino cultures
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese

The person in this role must be able to navigate assigned buildings for tours and crisis response. The person in this role must be able to move up to 75 pounds multiple times per shift. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
