RECREATIONAL SPORTS (BL-RECS-IUBLA)

Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, which is dedicated to supporting students health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer a wide variety of programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more. Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Serves as a front-line leader within the aquatics program, providing high-quality relational service to participants while overseeing lifeguards during shifts.
• Ensures participant safety, effective communication, and smooth daily operations by managing staff performance, enforcing policies, and coordinating aquatic program transitions.
• Performs as a key liaison between lifeguards and professional staff and supports facility operations and emergency response as needed.
• Ensures participant safety and provide accurate information and assistance to all users.
• Oversees lifeguard staff to maintain proper surveillance, rescue readiness, and station rotation.
• Delegates tasks, confirm completion, and provide immediate feedback to staff.
• Enforces RecSports policies and educate participants and staff on procedures.
• Assists with facility setup and transitions between programs and user groups.
• Monitors facility cleanliness and organization across aquatic spaces and equipment.
• Serves as primary communication liaison between lifeguards, participants, and professional staff.
• Completes reports, conduct inspections, and support emergency response when needed.

EDUCATION

Required

• General knowledge at the high school level

Preferred

• Some college

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 1 semester experience as a lifeguard with IU Recreational Sports

Preferred

• Experience leading or mentoring aquatic or lifeguard staff

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required

• Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Upon Date of Hire

These positions require standing for long periods of time and frequently moving about the workspace. Positions require working both indoors and outdoors and ability to move up to 50 pounds with assistance. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This is an in-person position.

Onsite work will take place at the following campus recreation facilities:

• Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC).
• Bill Garrett Fieldhouse.
• IU Outdoor Pool.

$14.30 per hour

Flexible schedule up to 29 hours per week; evening, weekend, and early morning shifts required based on facility needs.

Not to exceed 29 hours per week across all campus positions.
