Department Specific Responsibilities
- Supports the Jacobs School of Music storytelling, promotion, and visibility efforts by producing compelling written, visual, and multimedia content that connects the school's artistic and academic work to internal and external audiences, prospective students, alumni, donors, faculty, and the broader public. This role sits at the intersection of journalism, marketing, and the arts, translating performances, research, and student achievement into content that resonates across web, social, print, and video.
- Writes and edits feature stories, profiles, and web copy that capture the artistic and academic life of the school.
- Produces and helps produce and coordinates photography and video coverage of performances, recitals, master classes, and events.
- Collaborates with faculty, students, and staff to source stories and gather materials.
- Supports email newsletters, digital publications, and season/program materials.
- Partners with designs and web teams to ensure content is optimized for each platform.
- Tracks content performance and, in consultation with the director, adjusts strategy based on engagement data.
General Responsibilities
- Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
- Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
- Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
- Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
- Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
- Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
- May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, arts administration, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years in relevant field.
Preferred
- 2 years of experience in content creation, journalism, or marketing.
- Experience in higher education or arts organization is a plus.
- Strong writing and editing skills; ability to translate technical or artistic material for general audiences.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
This position requires occasional coverage of evening/weekend events as needed.
