UITS RESEARCH COMMUNITY ENGAGE (UA-RCEI-IUBLA)

This position is with the Academic and Artificial Intelligence (AI) division of University Information Technology Services (UITS). Academic and AI Innovation supports academic technologies for teaching, research, and outreach, while advancing a distinct AI innovation agenda focused on strategy, platforms, governance, trust, partnerships, and literacy.

This position works within a collaborative, dynamic team with extensive expertise in scientific computing, research computing, and cyber-infrastructure. A person in this role supports Jetstream2 and ACCESS Operations, working with researchers and technical teams to analyze needs, improve workflows, and shape researcher-facing services and systems.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Translates stakeholder needs into actionable requirements and helps ensure these nationally available advanced cyberinfrastructure services are usable, accessible, and aligned with researcher needs.
• Performs advanced systems analysis for Jetstream2, ACCESS Operations with a focus on researcher experience, usability, and accessibility.
• Consults with researchers, facilitators, developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to identify needs and define business and functional requirements.
• Develops user stories, acceptance criteria, workflow documentation, functional requirements, and implementation plans that translate stakeholder needs into actionable development priorities.
• Conducts workflow analysis and usability evaluations and assesses websites, documentation, training materials, and other researcher-facing resources to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Implements and maintains lightweight solutions within existing platforms, such as web content management systems (WCMS), forms, and other configurable tools, to address user and operational needs.
• Supports project planning, implementation, quality assurance, and user acceptance testing to ensure solutions meet documented requirements and researcher needs.
• Researches and applies best practices in systems analysis, user experience, accessibility, and service design and provides guidance to project teams.

General Responsibilities

• Performs advanced systems analysis, including implementation and documentation, quality assurance testing, and documentation development.
• Performs project planning, formulating objectives, preparing proposals and detailed functional requirements documents, and developing support materials; may lead project implementation and quality assurance efforts.
• Assesses documentation and training as well as web and electronic information sources.
• Consults with stakeholders to identify and evaluate functional requirements of new and existing systems; contributes advanced knowledge to large scale development efforts.
• Ensures system analysis protocols adhere to all university policies and standards; may participate in committees and communities of practice to share and improve system analysis practices across the university.
• Provides advanced research/analysis and stays up-to-date on new industry standards for systems administration and analysis.
• May serve as project leader; often provides guidance to junior peers.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science or related field.)

Preferred

• PhD in a related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 5 years of systems analysis or related experience.

Preferred

• Experience working in scientific computing, research computing, or research support environments.

• Experience conducting stakeholder interviews, requirements-gathering sessions, or other discovery activities to understand user needs, workflows, challenges, and goals.
• Experience translating stakeholder needs into clear user stories, functional requirements, acceptance criteria, workflow documentation, and actionable development priorities.
• Experience applying user-centered design, usability, and accessibility practices to improve systems or services.
• Strong interviewing, facilitation, and active-listening skills, with the ability to elicit and clarify requirements from technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience evaluating digital interfaces, documentation, and workflows for usability and accessibility.
• Experience developing user stories, functional requirements, acceptance criteria, and workflow documentation.
• Experience authoring or co-authoring conference papers, technical papers, reports, or presentations that communicate project outcomes, findings, or best practices to research and professional audiences.
• Familiarity with web technologies, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), content management systems, and software development processes, with the ability to implement lightweight solutions within existing platforms and collaborate with technical teams on more complex development.
• Familiarity with version control systems such as Git, Linux-based computing environments, and project management software.
• Familiarity with AI/ML tools and workflows or interest in developing these skills.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This is a grant-funded position.

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

$85,000 - $90,000 per year based upon experience and internal equity within the department.
