The Center for Behavior and Systems Innovation (CBSI), building upon the nationally recognized HANDS in AutismĀ® model established in 2004, advances implementation of evidence-based practices through training, consultation, systems innovation, resource development, and community-engaged research. The Center builds "local capacity" by partnering with autistic individuals, families, educators, healthcare providers, employers, community organizations, and state agencies to improve outcomes across educational, healthcare, employment, justice, and community settings. Guided by the philosophy that evidence-based practices are "Essential for autism, beneficial for all," CBSI develops practical tools, professional learning opportunities, implementation supports, and resources that strengthen systems serving individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), neurodevelopmental disabilities, behavioral health needs, and broader communities. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, implementation science, and responsive partnerships, the Center remains agile in addressing emerging community, statewide, national, and international needs while advancing Indiana University's (IU) missions of teaching, research, and service.
The Marketing and Communications Specialist serves as a shared communications resource for the Center for Behavior and Systems Innovation (CBSI) and the Indiana Resource Center for Autism (IRCA), leading strategic marketing, branding, and communications efforts that advance the Centers' education, research, service, and community engagement missions.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, this position develops compelling multimedia content, manages digital communication platforms, supports dissemination of evidence-based resources, and promotes statewide, national, and international initiatives.
- Translates complex research and implementation efforts into accessible, engaging communications that strengthen stakeholder engagement, expands organizational visibility, and increases the impact of externally funded projects.
- Supports continuous improvement through data-informed marketing strategies, coordinated brand management, and stewardship of communication assets that ensures materials remain current, accessible, and readily available across both Centers.
- Develops and implements integrated marketing and communications strategies that increases awareness, engagement, and participation in the Centers' programs, services, educational offerings, and research initiatives.
- Manages branding, messaging, websites, newsletters, social media, email campaigns, publications, and other communication channels to ensure consistent, accessible, and audience-centered communications.
- Creates compelling written, graphic, photographic, video, and multimedia content that communicates the Centers' impact, evidence-based practices, partnerships, and innovations to audiences across Indiana, the United States, and internationally.
- Monitors communications and marketing analytics to evaluate effectiveness and guides continuous improvement of outreach and engagement strategies.
- Supports communication and marketing efforts for statewide, national, and international initiatives, conferences, trainings, grant-funded projects, and strategic partnerships.
- Collaborates with Indiana University communications offices, community partners, professional organizations, and funding agencies to increase visibility and dissemination of Center activities and resources.
- Translates research, implementation efforts, and program outcomes into accessible communications for educators, families, providers, policymakers, researchers, and community stakeholders.
- Works closely with the Centers' Instructional Designer to ensure marketing, educational, and dissemination materials are aligned, accessible, and effectively communicated across audiences and platforms.
- Partners with operations staff, navigators, project teams, and subject matter experts to coordinate communications supporting programs, events, products, and stakeholder engagement.
- Collaborates with team members to review, catalog, organize, and maintains communication and dissemination assets, supporting an efficient registry and monitoring system that keeps materials current, appropriately formatted, brand compliant, and readily available across both Centers.
- Performs other duties in support of Center priorities, strategic initiatives, and organizational growth.
General Responsibilities
- Independently creates basic communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
- Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
- Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
- Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
- Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
- Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field.
Preferred
- Master's degree.
- Coursework in digital marketing, brand strategy, multimedia production, or communications.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Experience in digital marketing, brand strategy, multimedia production, or communications
- Experience developing and implementing strategic marketing and communications plans.
- Experience managing websites, social media platforms, email marketing campaigns, and digital communications.
- Experience creating content for diverse audiences across print, web, video, and social media.
- Experience supporting communications for higher education, healthcare, nonprofit, research, or public service organizations.

- Strong organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze marketing metrics and use data to inform communication strategies.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
