The Associate Director of Development is a pivotal member of the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) advancement team. Responsible for the planning and execution of stewardship and annual giving campaigns designed to increase participation, engagement, and annual giving donations among alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and other constituents and supporters of Indiana University.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Acts as the central point person for all SPH-B donor stewardship activities, ensuring every donor experiences the impact of their gift.
- Designs and executes the process for documenting scholarship fund use. Coordinates with student recipients to collect thank-you letters and reflections to report back to donors.
- Oversees the school's gift acknowledgment process, ensuring timely and personalized "thank you" communications from leadership, faculty, staff and students.
- Partners with the IU Foundation (IUF) Stewardship team to align school-specific efforts with university-wide donor recognition standards.
- Plans and participates in a variety of solicitation efforts for outright annual fund gifts from alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and other constituents and supporters of the university via direct mail, email, phone, in person, and/or social media.
- Participates in fundraising outreach is generally focused on programming or funds/needs of the school or spanning multiple departments.
- Cultivates donor relationships through regular communications and outreach events; updates, maintains, and forwards prospective and current donor files and information to other development officers as necessary.
- Tracks progress toward goals, reporting or presenting figures on a regular basis to manager, team, and/or department/school representative.
- Creates and distributes compelling print and digital fundraising materials for each campaign; tracks cost, funds received, and metrics such as return on investment for solicitation and pledge to donation yield.
- Designs and executes mass-market annual giving efforts (direct mail, digital, and crowdfunding) in collaboration with IU Foundation Annual Giving.
- Serves as the school's lead for IU Day, coordinating digital strategy, matching gift challenges, and community engagement to maximize participation.
- Regularly takes on complex special projects, such as re-engaging lapsed donors, creating new annual fund campaigns, or developing and executing targeted events for potential donors.
- May participate in committees or strategy teams with department, school, campus, and/or Indiana University Foundation representatives and assists with setting short- and long-term annual giving strategy.
- Provides guidance to SPH-B departments, centers, and labs on best practices for engaging their specific alumni cohorts.
General Responsibilities
- Responsible for supporting the university's stewardship efforts to ensure adherence to donor intent of donated funds, proper donor acknowledgment/recognition, and reporting on how gifts are used.
- Individually follows up via phone or in-person with donors to provide updates on fund allocation and projects/initiatives pursued through funding and convey appreciation for the support of Indiana University. Assists Executive Director of Development in acknowledging donors for life by way of visits, providing information, handling thank you communications, and other forms of recognition.
- Through communications with donors and review of giving history reports, identifies potential donors to ongoing university campaigns and refers to the appropriate development staff for outreach.
- Generates and analyzes regular reports of donor activity; ensures that tracking and reporting of stewardship activities/data are timely, thorough, and transparent.
- Investigates and resolves claims of non-adherence to donor intent, escalating to manager as appropriate, taking care to preserve ongoing positive relationships with donors.
- Monitors Foundation accounts to ensure the integrity of funds against donor intent. Collaborates with departments/schools to standardize stewardship practices and share best practices.
- Provides an excellent donor experience through personalized customer service, active listening, inclusive language, and thoughtful and persuasive discussion, consistently upholding the integrity and mission of Indiana University.
- May take on special projects, such as developing suitable recognition plans tied to cultivation and solicitation strategies for market segments and designing targeted events for potential donors.
- Collaborate with IUF Stewardship team to ensure consistency of stewardship plans.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years of experience in fundraising, sales, a higher education foundation, or related field.
Preferred
- 5 years of professional experience in higher education, sales, public relations, or alumni relations.
- A proven track record of individual gift solicitation is highly valued.

- Strong project management skills, specifically the ability to juggle multiple stewardship deadlines (e.g., IU Day and annual scholarship reporting).
- Ability to leverage Customer Relationship Management (CRM) data to track donor interactions. Familiarity with IU systems (Crimson/Blackbaud, ETA, Workfront) is a plus.
- A self-starter motivated by hitting fundraising targets and engagement metric.
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
