Job Title: Consultant - Lactation I
Location: IU Health Bloomington, Indiana University Regional Academic Health Center
Schedule: PRN (as needed); shifts available: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM or 8:00 AM – 8:30 PM, depending on the day of the week

Position Overview:
The Consultant-Lactation I provides comprehensive infant feeding services to families through inpatient and outpatient programs. This role involves developing, marketing, and implementing lactation programs, increasing awareness, and creating educational materials tailored to diverse audiences. The Lactation Consultant promotes a therapeutic environment, offers clinical reasoning and decision-making, and supports families in achieving optimal infant feeding outcomes. This position is essential in supporting maternal health, childbearing families, and promoting breastfeeding success.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver comprehensive lactation consulting services to inpatient and outpatient families.
  • Develop and implement lactation program plans and educational materials.
  • Increase awareness of the lactation services through outreach and marketing efforts.
  • Provide clinical reasoning, decision-making, and compassionate support to families.
  • Promote a therapeutic, culturally sensitive environment that respects diversity.
  • Maintain high standards of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, patients, and families across various environments.
  • Pursue ongoing educational opportunities to improve clinical practice and knowledge.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (I.B.L.C.E.) is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; must be obtained within 1 month of hire or upon completion of orientation.
  • Experience working with childbearing families or maternal health nursing preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and manage resources effectively.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and cultural competency skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and foster a compassionate environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with staff, patients, and families.
  • Ability to react appropriately in diverse situations and environments.
