Location: Bloomington Hospital
Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM, with on-call rotation for nights, weekends, and holidays.

Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital is seeking a compassionate and experienced Master’s Degree Social Worker (MSW) with permanent LSW licensure to provide face-to-face psychosocial support, crisis intervention, and discharge planning for patients across the lifespan. This role involves collaborating closely with healthcare teams, community agencies, and protective services to ensure safe, timely, and comprehensive patient care.
Position Overview:
The Social Worker will:
Meet face-to-face with patients and families, conducting psychosocial assessments and providing counseling
Collaborate effectively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate the episode of care, ensuring patients and families receive necessary resources and education
Interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, role modeling caring practices to other caregivers
Assess psychosocial risk factors through evaluation of prior functioning, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping mechanisms
Counsel patients and families on emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness or disability
Access and mobilize family and community resources to meet identified needs
Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral
Serve as the primary point of contact for cases involving child abuse/neglect, elder abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence
Act as liaison between IU Health and local protective services (APS/DCS)
Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and clinical leadership in dangerous or potentially violent situations
Support complex discharge planning to ensure safe transitions of care
Provide specialized mental health services, including crisis and addiction assessments, with recommendations for psychiatric or community resources
Lead interventions in guardianship, foster care, adoption, and mental health placements (Level II)
Support end-of-life care, guardianship, foster care, and other complex cases requiring sensitive handling
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work required.

Licensure:
Must hold a permanent Indiana LSW license.

Certifications:
Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or an alternative de-escalation training required within 6 months of hire.
Experience: Relevant experience in healthcare, mental health, or community services preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:
Evidence-based psychosocial assessment, short-term therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention skills
Knowledge of disease processes, human behavior, and social needs
Complex discharge planning capabilities
Legal understanding of child and adult protective mandates (state and county)
Principles of growth, development, and end-of-life care
Ability to identify decision-makers and lead goals of care conversations
Experience working with geographically, culturally, and financially diverse populations
Strong relationships with hospital staff, law enforcement, APS/DCS, schools, probation, and community agencies
Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and general computer literacy
Core Competencies:
Strong communication, active listening, and rapport-building skills
Ability to manage crises using de-escalation techniques
Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
Demonstrate compassion, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity
