Counselor – Behavioral Health MS (Licensed or License-Eligible)

Location: Bloomington Hospital
Position Type: Full Time


Position Overview:

The Behavioral Health Counselor facilitates patient involvement in treatment and education within a supportive milieu. The role involves conducting individual, group, and family counseling, performing utilization review and discharge planning, and providing crisis intervention. The counselor collaborates with healthcare team members to ensure patients receive timely, safe services, and families are connected with necessary resources and education.


Key Responsibilities:

· Facilitate patient engagement in treatment and education within a therapeutic environment.

· Conduct individual, group, and family therapy utilizing evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT).

· Perform functions related to utilization review and discharge planning to promote safe and effective patient care transitions.

· Communicate and collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to facilitate the episode of care.

· Interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, role modeling caring practices to other caregivers.

· Assess patients' and families' psychosocial risk factors through evaluation of prior functioning levels, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping skills.

· Counsel patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness/disability.

· Access and mobilize family and community resources to meet identified needs.

· Provide mental health assessments of patients upon physician referral.

· Deliver therapeutic interventions to facilitate complex discharge planning.

· Serve as the point person for cases involving child abuse/neglect, elder/adult abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence.

· Act as liaison between Indiana University Health and local child and adult protective teams (APS/CPS).

· Provide intervention in guardianship (temporary/permanent), foster care, adoption, and mental health Level II placements.


Qualifications & Requirements:

· Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health field such as Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.

· Experience: 0-3 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience.

· Licensure: License-eligible in Indiana as an LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, or LCAC. The candidate must have a minimum of a permanent LSW, LMHC-A, or LMFT-A upon hire.

· Certifications:

o Crisis intervention certification may be required.

o BLS certification may be required.

· Knowledge & Skills:

o Knowledge of disease processes and human behavior related to health and social needs.

o Implementation of evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT).

o Legal knowledge of state and county adult and child protective mandates.

o Principles of growth and development across the lifespan.

o Techniques of crisis intervention and de-escalation.

o Ability to create a safe, therapeutic environment, including instructing patients in daily activities and programming.

o Basic proficiency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

o Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, probation, and healthcare teams.
