We are seeking a dedicated Lactation Consultant I to provide comprehensive infant feeding services, support families through inpatient and outpatient care, and promote breastfeeding and maternal health.
Position Overview:
The Lactation Consultant I provides expert infant feeding services to families, develops and implements lactation support plans, and increases awareness of the lactation program. They create educational materials for diverse audiences and promote a compassionate, therapeutic environment to support maternal and infant health. This role requires clinical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide comprehensive breastfeeding and infant feeding support to inpatient and outpatient families.
• Develop, market, and implement individualized lactation plans.
• Educate patients and families about breastfeeding techniques, benefits, and challenges.
• Increase awareness of the lactation program through educational initiatives and outreach.
• Develop educational materials tailored to various audiences.
• Collaborate with healthcare teams to promote best practices in maternal and infant care.
• Maintain accurate documentation of services provided.
• Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with lactation practices and certifications.
Qualifications & Requirements:
• Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) (IBCLC certification required within 1 year of hire) strongly preferred at time of hire.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 1 month of hire or upon completion of department orientation.
• Background working with childbearing families or maternal health nursing.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize workload effectively.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to promote a compassionate, therapeutic environment.
• Excellent clinical reasoning, decision-making, and clinical thinking skills.
• Effective communication skills, including verbal, written, and non-verbal methods (presence, touch, eye contact).
• Ability to recognize and respect cultural differences at many levels.
• High level of patient confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to actively seek educational opportunities to enhance clinical practice.
• Ability to maintain positive working relationships with peers and staff.
• Flexibility and sound judgment to react appropriately in various situations.
