Position Overview

Data Engineer is an existing role within Kimball Electronics Shared Services. This position would be located at Kimball Electronics headquarters in Jasper, IN with the ability to work remotely and report to the IT Data Integration Manager. It is a global position that will be responsible for creating and maintaining the data infrastructure and data pipelines that ingest source data into a centralized source of truth with clean, relevant information for the organization to consume. The data engineer helps support and design our overall data strategy. This role will work closely with a broad range of people, spanning numerous departments, and ranging from shop floor to executive level employees.

Quick Summary

The person in this role will balance their time working on organizational data needs and maintaining and enhancing the data integration systems. To be successful, the candidate must be self-motivated to learn and explore new tools. They must possess the ability to think creatively with an enterprise mindset to do what is best for Kimball. The ability to work and communicate with a variety of cultures, languages, situations, departments, and people is a critical skill for this role. The goal is to support, grow, and continuously improve our decision support toolsets for the organization. This requires a willingness to support and promote change, as well as a great deal of patience. This position will be an advocate to streamline processes through automation to eliminate manual processes and increase organizational productivity.

Key Performance Objectives

  • Short Term: (0 to 6 months)
  • Learn Kimball Electronics, Inc. (KEI) Guiding Principles and cultural attributes
  • Basic understanding of data warehousing at KEI. Build familiarity with key datasets, processes, interfaces, and current state
  • Complete the necessary Microsoft and SAP Training Course(s) as requested/desired
  • Understand SAP Business Objects and Microsoft Power BI at KEI to aid in data collection, transformations, and administration of system roadmaps when applicable
  • Research functionality currently not being utilized and develop a strategy for deployment
  • Research, test, and explore functionality for potential value add of SAP Datasphere and Microsoft Fabric
  • Begin developing a training plan for data tools in conjunction with other Microsoft tools where applicable
  • Document, organize, standardize, and publish key data integration information at Kimball
  • Understand the capabilities of the broad range of tools in our portfolio such as the Microsoft Power Platform, SQL, SharePoint, etc. to aid in problem solving and solution development
  • Midterm: (6 to 24 months)
  • Gain advanced understanding of key datasets in each functional area at Kimball to address business needs
  • Architect a global master data management and data governance process with the help of key stakeholders
  • Create and/or implement a data catalog to document the data sources, fields, and other metadata to support better data governance and ease of data discovery for data analysts and business users
  • Plan and implement the transition of SAP Business Objects as it aligns with Kimball’s future data and analytics platform strategy
  • Build advanced knowledge of tools and concepts to design efficient process and data architectures to solve business problems
  • Optimize Digital Organization (Folders, Categories, Workspaces, Security Model, Mobile, etc.)
  • Become internal consultant for data integration support problems and requests
  • Own and manage projects independently, engaging needed team members, and providing updates/report-outs through project completion.
  • Longer Term:
  • Mentor and train new employees as this department continues to grow.
  • Continuously improve and evolve current processes and systems.
  • Support all analytics systems and develop any applications or processes necessary to support KEI goals identified by the organization
  • Gain an understanding of business processes and operations to identify how we can support the business data needs
  • Continue training and educating end users about the decision support tools we have available and the opportunities they provide when used effectively.
  • Key knowledge expert in the Data Strategy initiative. (Identification, Blueprinting, Implementation, Governance, etc.)
