Your greatest work is ahead!

Leidos' Power Delivery Solutions (PDS) division is hiring for a Lead Microgrid Engineer - Energy Storage and Generation Applications (100% Remote) to provide comprehensive applications/project engineering support for our distributed energy and microgrid projects that typically include managing a variety of DER and microgrid assets such as solar, energy storage, controls, and reciprocating engines. The role reports to the Chief Engineer and requires demonstrated Owner’s Engineering experience in solar PV and other generation technologies, supporting multiple clients through the full project lifecycle.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide resilient and adaptable power system solutions that effectively utilize all resource types to withstand disruptive events, lower operating costs, and improve renewable utilization.
  • Understand client goals and constraints to provide effective leadership on solutions that bring these goals to reality.
  • Work with switchgear, battery, inverter, generator, and other DER manufacturers to develop innovative designs and solutions. This will primarily include designing installations for low and medium voltages up to 35kV but will also include interconnections at higher voltages.
  • Coordinate with various interconnected utilities and complete interconnection applications.
  • Navigate legacy drawings, brownfield equipment, and incomplete information to provide the best plan, estimate, and design to achieve client objectives.
  • Effectively manage engineering subconsultants and construction partners.
  • Serve in an Owner’s Engineer capacity, representing client interests during development, design review, procurement, construction, commissioning, and interconnection.
  • Lead technical review of EPC and OEM deliverables to ensure compliance with client standards and project performance requirements.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and performance validation activities.

What does Leidos need from me?

  • Lead Position - Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program with a focus on power and a minimum of eight years’ experience in the design and construction of distribution/generation/storage projects.
  • Demonstrated experience providing Owner’s Engineering services for PV and/or other power generation projects across multiple clients.
  • Must bring a keen client focus and an excitement to be part of some groundbreaking projects.
  • Must bring design experience from one or more of the following areas - Distribution, Substation Protection & Control (P&C), or Substation Physical.
  • Solid awareness of relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g., NEC, IEEE 1547, IEEE 386)
  • Ability to create and guide others in the creation of relevant drawings including One Line Diagrams, Electrical Plans/Elevations, AC/DC Schematics, etc.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in both design and quality control roles.
  • Familiarity with factory acceptance tests and on-site commissioning of power systems to ensure they meet performance and safety standards.
  • Thorough technical understanding of DER technologies including storage (e.g., VRFB), micro nuclear reactors (MNRs), solar generation, and conventional engine/turbine generators.
  • Familiarity with challenges in the microgrid environment including effective grounding, synchronization, distributed control, and remedial action schemes.
  • Familiarity with various regulatory frameworks for DER interconnections (e.g., CPUC Rule 21).
  • Experience in submitting interconnection applications, and reviewing Utility studies which may include Detailed Studies, Facility Studies, and System Impact Studies.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Bluebeam.
  • Collaboration with project managers, engineers, technicians, and regulators to ensure the successful implementation of power system projects.

Favorable if you have:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) in power or actively progressing towards that license.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience with protection or arc flash studies utilizing ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, and/or SKM
  • Experience with grounding or illumination studies utilizing CDEGS and/or AutoLUX.
