We’re seeking a Jr. Telecom Engineer who is motivated by variety, is seeking a challenging environment for professional growth, and is interested in supporting large information technology projects for one of our electric utility clients with headquarters in New Orleans.
The Jr. Telecom Engineer will support the design, implementation, and maintenance of telecommunications systems critical to electric utility operations. This entry-level role will assist in ensuring reliable communication networks that support grid operations, SCADA systems, substations, and field communications. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, technically curious, and committed to supporting safe and reliable utility services.
Location: This position is remote.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design, configuration, and maintenance of telecommunications systems, including fiber optics, microwave, radio, and IP-based networks
- Support communication infrastructure for SCADA, protection systems, substations, and control centers
- Participate in network performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and issue resolution
- Assist with installation, testing, and commissioning of telecom equipment
- Prepare and update technical documentation, network diagrams, and system records
- Support field activities including site surveys, inspections, and vendor coordination
- Collaborate with engineering, IT, and operations teams to ensure network reliability and security
- Ensure compliance with company standards, safety policies, and industry regulations
- Assist in emergency response efforts related to communication system outages
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- Basic understanding of telecommunications systems and networking concepts (TCP/IP, routing, switching)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
Preferred:
- Internship or co-op experience in telecommunications, utilities, or related field
- Familiarity with fiber optic systems, RF communications, or microwave networks
- Knowledge of SCADA communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, IEC 61850)
- Experience with network monitoring tools or basic configuration of routers/switches
- Exposure to AutoCAD or GIS systems
- Industry certifications (e.g., CCNA or progress toward certification)

Pay Range:
