Summary

The Fiber Technician role is responsible for running fiber into the customer’s residence or business. The Fiber Technician – L1 will also assist customers in finding the best location in the residence/business for the equipment, then set up the equipment and provide a walkthrough of how to use it. They will also be there to assist with any questions or concerns a customer may have and to ensure the customer receives the best possible experience.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install and properly route aerial and underground fiber drops
  • Perform basic splicing throughout the drop network
  • Installation of fiber and equipment in the customer’s home
  • Customer education with the Calix App and Wi-Fi setup
  • Going into attics, crawlspaces, wall fishing, and climbing ladders
  • Review home/business layout to determine job specifications and installation needs
  • Orders and/or obtains required equipment
  • Attempts to solve problems and challenges where appropriate
  • Proper communication/notating
  • Interfaces with customers to negotiate the placement of equipment, may assist with web access, and trains the customer on how to use the new equipment
  • Ensures the customer is satisfied with the work that has been done
  • Responds to inquiries and provides follow-up to customers
  • Able to perform basic troubleshooting through drop network utilizing OTDR and optical power meters
  • May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by Mainstream
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support emergency response, service restoration, and operational continuity. This requirement applies to all technician levels.
  • Completed other tasks as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required

  • 1+ years of installation and/or sales experience, recommended

  • Must meet Mainstream’s standards of professionalism in communications and appearance

  • Must wear Mainstream-branded attire and wear appropriate safety apparel, and be aware of and follow all established safety practices and procedures

  • Must be able to pass an initial hire drug screen

  • Must be able to pass Mainstream random drug screening

  • Ability to communicate naturally and pleasantly over the telephone

  • Ability to professionally communicate extensively in person during in-home installation

  • Requires alertness and attention to detail. Ability to work under stress

  • A valid driver’s license is required

  • Must be able to pass the MSFN motor vehicle record requirement

Preferred Skills

  • OSHA-10 certification, preferred
  • MSFN will provide OSHA-10 certification if not applicable
  • Ability to lift, carry, set up, climb, and take down ladders.
  • Ability to work with basic power tools
  • Ability to work in confined / low ventilation areas (attics and crawlspaces)
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions

Additional Notes

  • Position does involve working in both indoor and outdoor settings and in changing weather conditions.
  • Work settings may involve confined/low-ventilated areas such as attics and crawlspaces
  • Travel may be required from county to county within the state of Indiana
