Role Overview:

As Youth Employment Inspector, you will investigate claims of youth employment law violations at Indiana businesses where minors are predominately present. In addition to inspections, following complaints, you must also conduct both targeted and random inspections of workplaces, payroll records, etc. You will also serve as an educational resource to all firms, schools, or individuals who request youth employment law training or consulting.

This position works remotely and will be required to reside in and travel to counties in Southern Indiana.

Applicants must currently reside in Southern Indiana or have plans to relocate there within the next 30 days to be considered for this position.


Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Conduct thorough investigations of workplace conditions, often where minors are employed, to identify any safety hazards or violation of Indiana’s youth employment laws.
  • Audit time-card entry, payroll data, and personnel records at places of business inspected;
  • Work with workplace management to gather information and/or resolve issues and/or violations.
  • Issue violations and penalties as appropriate and re-inspect businesses with violations to ensure abatement.
  • Track all inspection, training, and consulting activities in the youth employment application.
  • Provide individual or group training and consultation to businesses on Indiana’s youth employment laws and rules.
  • Provide training and outreach services to Indiana middle and high schools on Indiana youth employment laws and rules.
  • Complete accurate and timely records and reports related to travel, work schedule, and work activities.
  • Work with the U.S. Department of Labor to remain abreast of applicable federal youth employment laws and rules.
  • Essential functions of this position require travel on most workdays to inspect, audit, examine, survey, or investigate clients, customers, or other regulated entities and to prepare reports of findings. The employee must also report to the agency’s central office for occasional meetings or events. The number and timing of work hours may vary daily or weekly to accommodate operational needs and staffing concerns at the client’s or customer’s worksite, minimize expenditures for repeated visits to complete the work, and allocate resources to complete assigned work effectively.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills; ability to speak professionally and concisely and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively work with all levels of an organization and to diffuse difficult customer situations.
  • Working knowledge and the ability to apply State and Federal laws and regulations concerning youth employment.
  • Ability to analyze procedures and policies and recommend improvements.
  • Ability complete assignments within established timeframes or by established due dates.
  • Proven skills in organization, prioritization, and follow-up.
  • Valid Indiana driver's License and clean driving record.

A degree is not required. However, project coordination or professional administrative experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
